Speaking

Dr. Marisol Capellan is a leadership researcher, author, TEDx speaker, executive coach, and former management and organizational behavior lecturer whose speaking work explores Responsible Authority™, leadership, AI, organizational behavior, accountability, workplace culture, women in leadership, human judgment, and the future of work.

Her keynotes are designed for executive teams, professional associations, universities, leadership conferences, HR and people leaders, business schools, corporate audiences, and organizations navigating the changing relationship between human authority and artificial intelligence. Her work combines scholarship, organizational experience, executive coaching, and public communication to help audiences think more clearly about leadership in environments where technology is becoming increasingly capable of recommending, evaluating, coordinating, deciding, and acting.

A central theme in Dr. Capellan’s current speaking work is Responsible Authority™, her emerging framework for understanding how organizations should preserve meaningful human judgment, accountability, voice, trust, and legitimacy as authority becomes increasingly distributed between people and intelligent systems. At the center of this work is a question that will become increasingly difficult for organizations to avoid: When AI acts, who is responsible?

Her signature keynote, Who Is Responsible When AI Acts? Responsible Authority™ in the Age of Intelligent Systems, examines what happens when organizations delegate more consequential work to artificial intelligence while human beings remain accountable for the results. The keynote explores the Human Authority Gap, managerial judgment, meaningful human oversight, employee voice, accountability without control, organizational trust, and the limits of delegation. It asks leaders to consider not only what AI can do, but what organizations should never fully delegate.

Another major speaking theme is the Human Authority Gap, which describes the condition that can emerge when people remain responsible for outcomes while losing some of the authority, information, judgment capacity, or ability to intervene necessary to meaningfully influence those outcomes. This topic is especially relevant for organizations using AI in hiring, performance management, risk, operations, customer service, education, professional services, or other consequential decision environments.

Dr. Capellan also speaks on the limits of symbolic human oversight through the topic Human in the Loop Is Not Enough. This work explores why the mere presence of a human reviewer does not guarantee meaningful judgment, challenge, or accountability. It examines the conditions necessary for real human oversight, including information, discretion, psychological safety, time, expertise, and genuine override authority.

Her longstanding work on Leadership Is a Responsibility remains central to her speaking platform. Drawing from her book of the same name, Dr. Capellan challenges audiences to consider leadership not only in terms of influence, performance, vision, or status, but also in terms of the consequences created by the exercise of power. This keynote explores leadership accountability, culture, trust, decision-making, organizational responsibility, and the obligations that accompany authority.

Dr. Capellan also speaks on women, power, and leadership, drawing from her doctoral research on the trajectory of women into leadership positions and the institutional and organizational conditions that shape access, advancement, sponsorship, credibility, and opportunity. Her work in this area examines leadership access, representation, organizational barriers, mentorship, sponsorship, confidence, legitimacy, and the responsibility organizations have to create systems in which talent can advance.

As an Afro-Latina, Black Dominican woman, immigrant, and mother, Dr. Capellan also brings a distinctive perspective to conversations about Afro-Latinidad, identity, intersectionality, belonging, organizational culture, and leadership. Her speaking in this area explores how race, gender, culture, identity, and power shape professional experience, credibility, leadership legitimacy, and advancement.

Another area of her speaking work focuses on leadership in a changing workplace, particularly the human capabilities that become more important as technology becomes more capable. These include emotional intelligence, judgment, trust, adaptability, communication, organizational awareness, confidence, relationship management, and responsible decision-making. Rather than treating AI as a purely technical issue, Dr. Capellan examines how technology changes the human expectations placed on managers and leaders.

Her speaking topics also include organizational behavior, workplace culture, inclusive leadership, emotional intelligence, professional advancement, mindset, confidence, executive leadership, employee voice, trust, responsible leadership, leadership accountability, organizational change, and the future of management.

Dr. Capellan delivers professional speaking engagements in both English and Spanish. Her international work has included universities and professional audiences across the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. She has served as a guest lecturer and trainer for institutions including Universidad Andrés Bello in Chile, Universidad Iberoamericana UNIBE in the Dominican Republic, and Universidad Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Colombia, among others.

Her professional background combines academic teaching, leadership research, graduate leadership education, executive coaching, corporate training, and organizational development. She is a former lecturer at the University of Miami Miami Herbert Business School, where she taught management and organizational behavior and served as Associate Director of the Master of Science in Leadership program. She is also the founder of The Capellan Institute and the author of Leadership Is a Responsibility.

Dr. Capellan has coached executives and professionals from organizations including Salesforce, Google, WarnerMedia, BlackRock, LendingClub, and Anheuser-Busch InBev, and has delivered leadership and professional-development programs for organizations including American Tower Corporation, NBCUniversal, Year Up, and the National Black MBA Association.

Her personal story of resilience, leadership, identity, and professional advancement has also been featured by CNN and Telemundo, including coverage of her journey as an immigrant in the United States and the role of mindset, resilience, and personal agency in her career trajectory.

Dr. Capellan’s speaking work is designed for organizations and audiences looking for more than inspiration. Her goal is to bring clear frameworks, research-informed thinking, practical questions, and intellectually substantive conversations to the challenges leaders are facing now.
